Paint calculator

Answer three questions and it tells you how many buckets of paint to buy. This is a planning estimate, not a professional measurement — call the shop on 0703 560 0054, or ask your painter or contractor to confirm the quantity, before you buy.

Question 1

How big is the room?

Tap the room closest to yours. You can change the numbers afterwards if you know them.

I measure in
m
m
m

Most rooms are about 3 metres (10 feet) high.

No tape rule? Walk the room heel to toe. One normal adult step is about 0.75 metres, so four steps is roughly 3 metres. Close is good enough — we round up.

Question 2

How many doors and windows?

We remove them from the wall, so you are not buying paint for a door.

Question 3

Which paint, and how many coats?

Not sure? Leave it on Emulsion and 2 coats — that is what most rooms take.

One coat over the same colour. Two coats for a new colour.

What to buy

Fill in the room size above.

This is an estimate — it can be wrong. Old, rough, bare or dark walls all drink more paint than this figure assumes. Before you buy, bring this number to the shop, or better still, have your painter or contractor check the room and confirm the quantity in person. Do not treat this number as final.

Plain answers

Questions people ask us at the counter.

How do I measure my room?

Measure the floor from wall to wall, one way and then the other — that is the length and the width. The height is floor to ceiling, usually about 3 metres. If you have no tape rule, count your steps: one normal step is about 0.75 metres.

What is a coat?

One coat is painting the whole wall once. Two coats means going over it a second time after the first dries. Two coats is normal when you are changing colour; one is enough when you are painting the same colour again.

Why does it say buckets and gallons, not litres?

Because that is how paint is sold across the counter. Emulsion, matt and satin come in 20-litre buckets and 4-litre gallons; gloss comes in 4-litre tins; Texcote comes in 20-litre buckets only. The calculator gives you the cheapest mix of those sizes.

Will this number be exact?

No, and no calculator can be — this one included. Old, bare, rough or dark walls swallow more paint than smooth ones, and every wall is different. Treat this as a starting estimate only, not a final answer. For anything beyond a small touch-up, have your painter or contractor look at the actual room before you buy — that is the only way to be sure.

Can somebody just tell me?

Yes. Call 0703 560 0054 or 0915 911 3222, or message us on WhatsApp with the size of your room, and we will tell you what to buy. You do not have to use the calculator at all.

What if I buy too much?

Better a little over than a little short — a part-used bucket keeps for touch-ups, while a colour mixed later may not match exactly. The calculator rounds up for that reason.
